Abstract
Colloidal inclusions like embedded proteins disturb the homogeneity of the lipid mixtures which form membranes. The induced concentration deviations generate an indirect attractive force between the inclusions. This force is investigated using an analytical method and Monte Carlo simulations for a lattice model. The interaction energy was found to be attractive and strong enough to cause aggregation of the membrane inclusions.
