Abstract
A new concept of elliptical flattened Gaussian beam (EFGB) is proposed in terms of tensor method, which generalize the original flattened Gaussian beam into 3-dimensional cases. The propagation formula of EFGB through axially nonsymmetric optical system is derived by the generalized Collins integral. By using this formula, the propagation of EFGB in free-space is calculated and discussed. The results show that the flat part of EFGB degenerates during propagation. The beam spots of EFGB rotate with propagation distance. These characteristics are different from that of circular flattened Gaussian beams or elliptical Gaussian beams.
