Abstract

We investigate, experimentally and numerically, polarization conversion from an aluminized echelette grating in regions near the resonant excitation of surface plasmons. Particular attention is paid to the difference between curves of the zeroth order cross-polarization reflection coefficients Rsp and Rps versus angle of incidence, a quantity that, if not zero, indicates asymmetry of the grating grooves. The results presented here show that, due to the high conductivity of aluminium, differences between cross-polarization coefficients are small, except at those conical configurations where polarization conversion is most enhanced through the excitation of surface plasmons.
