Abstract

While many have assumed that formal environmental management systems, whether they are based on the ISO 14001 standard or some other similar model, are mainly relevant in the private sector, a growing number of public agencies, especially local governments, are moving to adopt formal EMSs, following the Plan-Do-Check-Act approach embodied in the ISO standard. Other models are also emerging, such as the National Biosolids Partnership (NBP) EMS Program, that uses a structure very similar to ISO 14001, but also incorporates other features that are tailored to the biosolids industry.
