Abstract

A growing problem in many communities' wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is the need for sewer overflow treatment. These excess flows are due to the need for the WWTP to treat the combined flows from both sanitary and industrial wastewater, and wet weather (storm water) runoff from periods of heavy rainfall and snow melt. These excess flows, commonly called combined sewer overflow (CSO), are high in suspended solids, organic materials, infectious bacteria, BOD, COD, and numerous other contaminates that are a serious source of water pollution in communities served by combined sewer systems. They are also responsible for a significant portion of the degradation in the nation's water quality.
