Abstract

Abstract: Sixty‐eight geriatric patients with chronic brain syndrome residing in a state psychiatric hospital were studied in three groups to determine the effects of pipradrol hydrochloride (2 mg daily), placebo, and pipradrol hydrochloride (5 mg daily). The higher dosage of pipradrol was associated with improvement in ward behavior (psychological tests) at the three‐week point of the six‐week course of treatment. Placebo and the lower dosage of pipradrol were similar in their effects upon behavior; neither produced any significant change in the measures examined. No side effects were observed in any of the treatment groups. Differences in the reactivity of the nonpsychotic versus the psychotic patients were also investigated. The higher dosage of pipradrol appeared to increase positive ward behavior on the part of the nonpsychotic patients and to reduce negative ward behavior on the part of the psychotic patients.
