本书对资本主义起源问题提出一种新的研究方法和新的理论模式。新的研究方法是：把封建社会分为刚性体制和弹性体制，把封建社会中的异己力量分为体制内的异己力量和体制外的异己力量，将资本主义分为原生型的资本主义和非原生型的资本主义，并以此对资本主义起源作出解释。
