The formation in 1934 of the Action libérale nationale (ALN) as a third party in Quebec was largely a response, Patricia Dirks reveals, to the growing belief that the laissez-faire economic and social policies of Taschereau's Liberal government in Quebec allowed continued domination of francophone professionals and businessmen by anglophone big business interests and threatened to turn the working class toward socialism.
