Umberto Veronesi is one of the world’s leading experts in oncology. For twenty years, he was the director of the National Institute for the Study and Treatment of Cancer in Milan and is the founder of the European Institute of Oncology. His name is linked to major scientific breakthroughs including the development of the conservative surgical approach in breast cancer known as sentinel node biopsy, as well as radiation therapy. He has also been a driving force in melanoma research. In 2003, he created the Fondazione Umberto Veronesi for the promotion of scientific research. He has been awarded fourteen honorary degrees and has received the most prestigious international awards. He now resides in Milan with his wife and family.
