Description

Image processing, compression, storage, retrieval and communication for healthcare are subject to the most demanding user requirements, probably more so than many other domains. Fast-moving developments in fields such as digitized radiology have led to multimedia co-operation amongst medical professionals contributing to transmission solutions and the development of health network services, but it is not always easy to find the proper balance between the enthusiasm of researchers for innovations and the requirements of end-users, not to mention the willingness of industry to risk investment in new developments. This book, ‘Analysis of Multimodality 2D/3D Images’, presents the results of Research and Technological development realized mostly in the framework of the Health Telematics (formerly AIM: Advanced Informatics in Medicine) program, a research initiative of the EU, which ran in the early 1990s with the aim of developing tools, techniques and practices supporting a common European approach to healthcare informatics and telecommunications. Several industrial and academic research centers and clinical sites collaborated to reach the results presented here, which give an overview of the reality and potentiality of European co-operation in the R&TD domain at the time.
