Universalisability and egoism * This paper constitutes a considerable reworking of part of my Ph.D. dissertation, presented to the Universfty of Chicago in 1966; consequently, it owes a great deal to my dissertation advisors, particularly Professors Alan Gewirth and Fred Siegler. I have also been helped considerably by the criticisms of several of my former colleagues at York University who were kind enough to read the first draft of this paper.
