本书讲述了在日落时分，他挑着他的家来到了小镇。说家，其实就两只箩筐，挑着两个年幼的孩子，外加一口锅，一盘蚊帐和一只变形的洋瓷盆。孩子大的两三岁，女孩，是个瘫子；小的，不到半岁，男孩，是个瞎子，且患有严重软骨病，是个永远长不大的孩子。
