Description

The development of porous ceramic materials has presented a new challenge to various industries, because porous ceramics are more durable in severe environments and their surface characteristics permit them to satisfy very specific requirements. With the growing demand for porous ceramics in industrial applications, a number of technologies have been developed for fabricating these materials while attempting to control their pore characteristics and to identify pore-related properties. It is hoped to gain thereby a deeper understanding of the relationship, between various pore-related properties, for optimization purposes. At the moment, porous ceramic materials with more delicate and uniform pore structures, and with pore sizes ranging from a few hundred micrometers to a few nanometers, can be prepared for diverse purposes via either physical or chemical processing. One of the purposes of this special volume is to give readers a better understanding of the processing and properties of porous ceramic materials. This volume comprises a collection of papers covering the fabrication, property evaluation, characterization and application of the porous ceramic materials which have been developed so far. Included are fundamental theories, novel fabrication techniques, and special classes of ceramic materials for sensing and biomedical applications.
