Abstract
As motivation for the establishment of the German dye industry's ,,Interessengemeinschaft“ in 1916, research has emphasized the need to regain markets after the war. This study has sought to identify a contributory factor pertaining to the industry's operating conditions during the war. The authorities had seized existentially important chemicals which, through rationing, could only be used in the production of ammunition or in other private production. The consensus among the amalgamated parties was to seek to improve the situation for the industrial manufacture of ammunition, and to secure access to restricted chemicals for use in dye production. Following the amalgamation, the industry's consumption of sulphuric acid for ammunition purposes increased and was maintained at a high level until the cessation of the war being waged on two fronts in the autumn of 1917 allowed reduced consumption. The industry gained access to a relatively large quantity of raw materials released for private purposes and its consumption of these materials for the production of dyes increased in parallel with the reduction in military commitments.
