Abstract
There is increasing evidence and support for the use of arts programming as an intervention strategy to improve the skills and mental health of at-risk youths. The “black box” evaluations that have been conducted have shown that these programs have positive outcomes but have provided little indication about which components make for an effective program. This study reviews the limited literature on arts programming to identify a core set of practices that may be linked to positive outcomes. A template that identified key components was developed to guide program implementation as well as future research.
