在中国北方黄土高原的山西境内，有一个古老的民间传说尽人皆知，说的是大禹治水时，“打开灵石口，空出晋阳湖”的事。传说那时的晋阳湖很大很大，方圆数百里，占据了整个的晋中盆地。大禹带人凿开了今灵石县境内的一座大山口，使湖水外泄，才有了大片肥沃的平川土地。
