Abstract
Through an analysis of Ahmadou Kourouma's novel Allah n'est pas oblig (2000), this article contends that literature must hold a place alongside political theory in peacebuilding. Kourouma's novel creates a tension between two modes of narration (historical and environmental) to explore the ethics of writing war trauma. Instead of advocating adoption of one of the classical frameworks for ethics, the narrative tensions in this novel push the reader to approach ethics from within a relational framework. By placing Kourouma's novel in the context of a wider literary discourse on peace and conflict in sub-Saharan Africa that has emerged from 1974 to 2005, this article demonstrates that a meta-ethics may be drawn from these novels. This meta-ethics, based on the concepts of the reaching gesture and fluid attachment, can aid in framing peace and conflict studies.
