Abstract

The diagnosis of stellar magnetic fields must include the determinationof the transverse field component, thus the measurement of linearpolarization across spectral lines. While the neighbouring continuum isoften considered as a zero reference level, it can be polarized by variousscattering mechanisms. I discuss some consequences of such a superposition.
