Abstract

A 68-year-old man developed a systemic vasculitis shortly after coronary artery bypass grafting secondary to allopurinol toxicity. This syndrome has been previously described in connection with chronic renal impairment. Here, however, the temporary perioperative deterioration in renal function was to blame. To our knowledge, this is the first report of allopurinol toxicity related to acute renal failure. Allopurinol was prescribed because of alleged gout, presumably associated with the use of low-dose aspirin. Under these circumstances, use of allopurinol is better avoided.
