Abstract

We report an experimental perturbation method to produce local spatio-temporal velocityperturbations. It has been successfully tested on the Bénard-vonKármán instability for a circular cylinder at subcritical Reynolds numbers$Re. It is found to be useful in determining some physical properties of theinstability.
