Abstract

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Fe $L_{2,3}$, Ce $M_{4,5}$ and Ce $L_{2,3}$absorption edges of $\rm CeFe_2$ are reported. Application of the sum rules yields both the magnitude and the direction of the magnetic contributions (Fe 3d, Ce 5d and Ce 4f) to the total moment in $\rm CeFe_2$. A total Ce magnetic contribution of $-0.29\mu_{\rm B}$ ($M^{5d}=-0.13\mu_{\rm B}$, $M^{4f}=-0.16\mu_{\rm B}$) and aratio for the 4f contribution $\langle L_z\rangle/\langle S_z\rangle \approx -1$ are found, whichconfirms that the 4f states are highly hybridised in $\rm CeFe_2$. These results are ingood agreement with previously published LSDA calculations.
