Abstract
The political and financial turmoil in Indonesia over the past three years has affected Indonesians in various ways. This paper takes a comparative framework developed to illuminate changes in Euro-American society between the modem ethic of work and the postmodern aesthetic of consumption, to analyse the different ways people in Manggarai, Western Flores, reacted to the Indonesian crises.
