Abstract
A extensive vocabulary is understood to be essential to students' literacy. Yet, each student develops his or her own vocabulary at his or her own pace. Through life experiences, some students are more successful than others at learning the words that will serve them well in school. This article discusses the role of vocabulary in reading and describes how word lists and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can be used to provide individualized instruction for all vocabularydelayed learners. Two current ICT research and development projects that combine research-based word lists with automated speech recognition software to provide individualized online instruction also are described. The article concludes with a discussion of how this research might be of benefit to various populations in and outside of the United States.
