Abstract
There is extensive evidence that nucleons in the nucleus can sometimes form clusters and, of these, alpha-particle clusters are the most likely. This is illustrated by considering alpha-particle emission, transfer and capture reactions, and also the interactions of electrons, pions and kaons with nuclei. Present knowledge of the probability of clustering as a function of atomic number and position in the nucleus is summarized.
