Abstract

Ankle arthrodesis is a technique for the treatment of degenerative joint disorders and diseases. More than 30 open surgical techniques have been employed but in the mid-80s the arthroscopic technique was introduced, being much less invasive than previous procedures and reducing recovery time. We have detailed the arthroscopic technique by comparing results within Authors and, particularly, versus the open technique. From 1995 to 2006 we performed 41 arthroscopic arthrodesis interventions, evaluated by the AOFAS score; medium pre-operative values increased from 21 up to 80 after 6 months' examination. The arthroscopic technique is undoubtedly useful in performing an invasive intervention such as arthrodesis, allowing a significant reduction of the risks associated to extensive soft tissue dissection and infection
