Abstract

Polymer nanoparticles were prepared in the methyl methacrylate (MMA)/butyl methacrylate (BA)/HEMA/ metyl acrylate (MAA) microemulsion copolymerization process. A modified core-shell microemulsion copolymerization method was used. With this process high polymer: surfactant weight ratios (15:1 or greater), relatively concentrated (~30 wt%) latexes and small (~60 nm) particle diameters were attained. Properties of the latexes were characterized in detail by TEM, DSC, dynamic light scattering, spectrophotometer, and rotation viscometer.
