Abstract

Information on phase behavior and phase equilibria is essential for design and operation of refinery processes; however, such data are not readily available, especially under high-pressure conditions. In this work, phase behavior and equilibria of several heavy oils and light hydrocarbon systems were observed and measured. The heavy oils include petroleum residua, FCC decanted oils, and their blend. The light hydrocarbons are propane, isobutane, and pentane. Phase behavior was observed through a sapphire window on the PVT instrument. The phase coexistence conditions for L-L-V, L-L, and L-V were determined. The influence of temperature, pressure, and solvent to oil ratio on compositions have been determined by using a whole phase sampling technique.
