Abstract

A method of using plastic bonded iron powder to replace the tooth tips of a conventional laminated induction motor stator has been demonstrated. The implementation was conceived in the context of a seal-less pump, but is more generally applicable. The objective of this exercise was to demonstrate that the electromagnetic performance of the motor was essentially unaffected by the use of high-density, compression-molded tooth tips in a practical assembly. Thus, less expensive, lower density means could then be considered for production. In the test there was no significant difference in torque production observed in comparing a standard motor and the molded tooth tip motor. There was a small loss of efficiency noted, but the reasons for it are unclear and may be more related to the conditions of the experiment than the materials used.
