Abstract

An experimental technique is described for measuring the AC electrical conductivity and the dielectric constant of a granular material at temperatures up to 850°C. The electrical properties of three granular materials with good prospects for application in an electrostatically enhanced granular bed filter are discussed. From the measurements it appears that mullite (aluminum silicate) is better suitable for high temperature applications than quartz and aluminum oxide. It appears that the electrical properties of a granular packing of aluminum oxide which is mixed ('coated') with fly ash are dominated by the fly ash when the fly ash load is higher than a few percent (by weight).
