Abstract
John Warburton and Leo Horn's brief historical overview of China's developmental/environmental situation is provided, together with an analysis of the environmental costs of growth. They have put these environmental costs into a perspective that reflects both China's significant efforts in response and the dimension of global interdependency. They conclude with a plea for engagement with China that is non-judgmental and reflects the complexity of the inter-relationships.Development (2007) 50, 48–56. doi:10.1057/palgrave.development.1100413
