Abstract
Two photoperiodically sensitive periods in larval life can be recognized in the small ermine moth of orpine, Yponomeuta vigintipunctatus, viz., the mining first larval instar and the period of the fourth and fifth larval instars. Although accumulation of short days is used for diapause induction, the exposure of these larval instars to long day light regimes averts diapause to a large extent. It is assumed that this bimodal photoperiodic sensitivity has evolved to escape diapause induction in very early spring populations and to enable the species to produce an extra generation when environmental conditions later in autumn are exceptionally favourable.
