Abstract
Initial migration of P. penetrans from an inoculation point in a thin layer of agar or quartz sand was significantly greater in the direction of host seedlings. Tomato, carrot, and alfalfa seedlings were attractive in agar but only alfalfa seedlings were attractive in sand. Removal of seedling tops decreased attractiveness and areas where plants had been removed were less attractive than seedlings themselves. No attraction was found to excised root tips of mature plants and seedlings were not attractive when placed more than 12.5 mm from the inoculation site.
