Abstract
The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), appears to be the only host for Aphidius smithi Sharma and Subba Rao that has been reported in the literature. However, in some preliminary experiments, the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) was found to serve as a host for A. smithi under certain conditions in a controlled environment room. The temperature in this room was 21° ± 1°C, and the relative humidity was 50% ± 5%. Continuous illumination was provided by 13 Ken-Rad cool white 96T12 flourescent tubes and 14 Ken-Rad 25-w incandescent bulbs. Small rearing cages were made from 1-pint ice cream cartons, modified by cutting a slit in the side of the carton and passing the plant leaf inside the container. The top of the carton was covered with Saran Wrap so that observations could be made without disturbing the parasites.
