Abstract

Metzneria lappella Zeller is a common borer in seed heads of Arctium minus (Hill) Bernhardi and A. tomentosum Miller in eastern North Dakota, where it is parasitized by the wasps Agathis metzneriae Muesebeck (Braconidae), Perilampus similis Crawford (Perilampidae) (via A. metzneriae), and Hyssopus thymus Girault (Eulophidae). The 2 last-mentioned species are reported for the first time as parasites of M. lappella. The partia biennial eclosion of M. lappella is considered adaptive to the mammalian ecesis of burdock. The importance of H thymus as a pine tip moth parasite suggests the use of burdock to provide reservoir hosts in pine plantations.
