Abstract

A microsporidian, Nosema heliothidis Lutz & Splendor, was eliminated from a colony of Heliothis sea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), as follows: Larvae were reared at 35°C for the first 7 days which reduced the transovarian transmission of the disease. Eggs were collected from isolated pairs, the resulting larvae sampled for Nosema spores, and all groups which showed any Nosema were discarded. For the next several generations the adults were held in groups of 5 pairs, the progeny sampled for Nosema, and any group containing Nosema was discarded. Extensive decontamination procedures were carried out in the rearing area to reduce the chances of reinfection.
