Abstract

The extension of the proboscis of the adult blow fly, Phormia regina (Meigen) was used as the positive behavioral criterion in response to stimulation of the tarsal taste hairs with sugar solutions. Stimulus-percent response curves for 3 sugars were determined for flies that had been reared on liver, an artificial control medium, or experimental media to which sugars were added. The order of sensitivity was sucrose, fructose, glucose. Flies reared on the artificial control medium showed a decrease in sensitivity to fructose and glucose when compared with flies reared on liver. Addition of 0.25 M glucose to the rearing medium decreased the sensitivity of the adults to sucrose and glucose. Addition of 0.25 M fructose or 0.2 M mannose to the rearing medium had no effect. Addition of 0.2 M lactose or 0.1 M lactose plus 0.1 M fructose to the rearing medium decreased the sensitivity of the adults to sucrose and fructose.
