Abstract

Tritiated thymidine, by selectively labeling newly produced cells, provides a means of determining the rate of cell production and migration of newly produced cells from the site of production. Cell replacement in mammalian intestinal epithelium had been demonstrated by tritiated thymidine labeling as long ago as 1958 (Leblond and Messier), but a similar elucidation for insects has been lacking.
