Abstract

A digital electrolytic microrespirometer capable of measuring 0.01 liter of consumed oxygen is described. The device, a coulometric manometer, works on the principle that as oxygen is consumed, the resulting negative pressure draws an electrolytic solution into contact with a platinum electrode. This initiates current flow, and oxygen is generated by electrolysis. A solid-state electronic circuit is employed to measure current flow, which is translated into liters of oxygen on a digital counter. Calibration is accomplished both electronically and mechanically. This device is suitable for respiration studies of individual mites, Collembola, or single organisms weighing only 10 g.
