Effects of Hormones, Brain, and Endocrine Glands on the Ovary of Culex tarsalis in Vivo and in Vitro

Abstract

When female Culex tarsalis Coquillett were treated topically with -ecdysone, 22-isoecdysone, or CRD9499 (JH analog) before a blood meal, eggs were laid in normal rafts, and 90% or more of the eggs laid were viable. If similar treatments were carried out after a blood meal, eggs laid by females treated with CRD9499 or -ecdysone were effectively infertile. Treated females were given a 2nd blood meal after completion of the first gonotrophic cycle. They laid viable eggs in normal rafts. When the ovaries from newly emerged adults were cultured with brains and associated endocrine glands or treated with the juvenile hormone analog, ZR-515, or with Cecropia juvenile hormone, they showed deposition of yolk-like material over long periods. But after treatment with -ecdysone, the ovaries shrank, became transparent, and failed to deposit yolk-like material.
