Abstract

Five carrageenans were compared with agar as gelling agents on the basis of cost, virus yield per insect, and virus potency. Gelcarin® HWG was rated overall the best gelling agent, followed closely by Seagel® GH and Carrageenan® GH. All carrageenans were less expensive than agar. Larval weight and virus yield per larva were highest with diets containing Carrageenan® GH and Seagel® GH and lowest with Seagel® Pet. Virus from hosts reared on diets with Gelcarin® HWG and agar showed the highest biological activity in standard bioassays, whereas virus from hosts reared on diets with Seakem® 202 showed the lowest biological activity.
