Abstract
The life history of Arhyssus lateralis (Say) was studied in Jackson County, Ill., May 1980–July 1982, and the immature stages were described. The bug was also reared from egg to adult in the laboratory. This bivoltine species overwinters as adults that become active in early to late May, begin feeding and copulating on the heads of maturing Rumex acetosella L., and lay eggs shortly thereafter; it occurs on this host into September. A. lateralis also feeds and reproduces on maturing R. crispus L. (June–August), Polygonum pensylvanicum L. (August–October), and P. hydropiperoides Michaux (August–October). Most eggs were laid singly on the four host plants and 1st–5th instars were never found off the hosts. Seasonal occurrence of the adults and subsequent immature stages is discussed. Adults were last observed during the third week of October. A. lateralis was reared on R. acetosella under a 16L:8D photoperiod at ca. 23.9°C. The incubation period averaged 9.19 days. The average durations of the five subsequent stadia were 4.98, 4.09, 4.08, 5.99, and 9.64 days, respectively.
