Abstract

Existence of an aggregation pheromone in Drosophila virilis Sturtevant was demonstrated by laboratory bioassay. Sexually mature (6+-day-old) males produce compounds that attract males and females of any age tested (1–9 days). Extracts of males or females 2 to 6 days old were also significantly more attractive than controls, but extracts of females 6 to 10 days old or of males or females <2 days="" old="" were="" not="" attractive.="" flies="" had="" to="" be="" starved="" for="" a="" number="" of="" hours="" before="" they="" would="" respond="" to="" the="" pheromone.="" the="" pheromone="" from="" mature="" males="" contained="" two="" classes="" of="" active="" compounds:="" one="" with="" the="" polarity="" of="" hydrocarbons="" and="" the="" other="" similar="" in="" polarity="" to="" esters.="" the="" active="" hydrocarbon="" was="" identified="" as="" (z)-10-heneicosene,="" and="" the="" synthetic="" alkene="" was="" active.="" twenty-one="" carbon="" (z)-alkenes="" with="" double="" bonds="" in="" locations="" other="" than="" the="" 10="" position="" were="" not="" active.="" homologs="" of="" (z)-10-heneicosene="" having="" chain="" lengths="" of="" 18,="" 19,="" or="" 23="" to="" 25="" carbons="" were="" inactive,="" while="" the="" 20-="" and="" 22-carbon="" homologs="" had="" moderate="" activity.="" none="" of="" the="">E)-alkenes was active.
