Abstract

The Sheikh Zayed Bridge is the new gateway to Abu Dhabi island. The 840m long structure includes three steel arches with the main arch having a span of 234m. Zaha Hadid has chosen the unusual shape of the asymmetric arches to symbolize the dune hills in the desert. The contractor faced extraordinary engineering and construction challenges, previously unknown in the construction industry, thus demanding for innovative solutions. The bridge is opened to traffic on 22 November 2010. The total project cost is approximately 300 million USD.
