Abstract

A technique is described for using highly collimated soft gamma radiation to measure variation in relative wood density and radial growth of trees. It is demonstrated with 12 mm diameter increment cores of eastern white pine. Differences in absorption by late- and earlywood produces characteristic output curves analyzable for relative wood density (mean, maximum, or minimum), radial growth, percent earlywood, and percent latewood.
