Abstract
By counting trees in point samples and on plots of fixed radius, basal area, sum of diameters, and number of trees in a forest can be estimated without measuring any trees. If tree distribution is random, the method described can provide more efficient estimates of number of trees than point sampling with tree measurement, the standard technique, especially for stands with small trees.
