Abstract
Single aeciospores collected from one fusiform rust gall were used to inoculate northern red oak seedlings to establish 10 single-spore isolates of Cronartium quercuum f. sp. fusiforme. Three half-sib families of loblolly pine previously determined to be resistant, intermediate, and susceptible to C. quercuum f. sp. fusiforme were inoculated with basidiospores from each of the 10 isolates. Significant differences in pathogenicity were observed among the 10 isolates; however, the resistant family had a consistently low level of infection when challenged by all 10 rust isolates. The amount of variability observed among this relatively small sample of aeciospores from one gall indicates that the 10-gall mix currently used in screening for rust resistance is satisfactory.
