Abstract
Individual tree volume distribution, the proportion of total tree volume from the stump to any top diameter limit, was modeled with Johnson's SB distribution. Parameter prediction and percentile prediction approaches were evaluated. The SB; models provided reasonable alternatives to regression models and performed particularly well from about 40 percent of breast height to the bottom of the tree. Several problems which are commonly encountered with volume ratio data when using a regression approach can be overcome by the proposed distribution-based approaches. Forest Sci. 31:389-398.
