Abstract
The approach to unbiasedness used by McTague and Bailey (1985) is extended to prove that the critical height sampling stand volume estimator is unbiased for any tree taper. This is done by using the method of cylindrical shells to calculate individual tree volumes as solids of rotation. The bias that occurs when attempting to estimate total stand volume by sighting sample trees at dbh rather than stump diameter is discussed. Adjustments for bias are proposed when taper functions other than those used by McTague and Bailey (1985) are applicable, though the bias would be negligible in most practical applications.
