Abstract
The position taken in this article is the result of personal observation by the author during 18 years of intimate contact with a variety of wood industries and with timber research. That the wood industries as a whole may be charged with an inexcusable apathy towards research and a lack of appreciation of its value, even its indispensability, the course of events of the past 3 or 4 years emphasizes with particular impressiveness.
