Abstract
The author has made a direct study of the transpiration of several important forest trees. It was found that the transpiration in acre-inches of a hypothetical forest ranged from about 5 to 17 for red maple, 1 1/2 to 7 for American elm, and 2 to 8 for northern white pine. Sugar maple and beech each lost about 3 acre-inches. Attention is called to the fact that water requirement data collected on potted seedlings should not be applied to forest trees growing under natural conditions.
